Engineering Excellence Award shortlist success for Cork Lower Harbour Main Drainage project for Nicolas O’Dwyer

Dec 06, 2021

Nicolas O’ Dwyer are celebrating after being shortlisted for the Engineering Excellence Award at Engineers Ireland following our work on a €150million capital project in Cork, Ireland.

It comes after the Cork Lower Harbour Main Drainage Project was recognised as the winner of the Engineering Infrastructure Category as part of the Engineers Ireland Engineering Excellence Digital Series, which means the project is now in the running for the Engineering Endeavour of the Year for 2021.

Nicolas O Dwyer were the engineering services provider on the major Irish Water project, which connected 20,000 homes and businesses to the drainage scheme and ended the practice of discharging the equivalent of 40,000 wheelie bins of raw sewage into Cork Harbour every day.

The project has also greatly improved the amenity value of the Cork Lower Harbour for the surrounding communities of Ringaskiddy, Carrigaline, Crosshaven, Passage West, Monkstown and Cobh town.

It is one of five engineering projects that were selected by Engineers Ireland to represent the top engineering initiatives undertaken in the fields of innovation, sustainability, buildings and structures, and infrastructure in 2021.

They produced a series of videos to shine a light on the creative ways Ireland’s engineers seek to support and transform society, and how the work of engineers behind the projects, benefits communities across the world.
